A Horse Named Sunrise was inspired by author Karen Storer's volunteer work in equine therapy at Equestrian Connection in Lake Forest, Illinois. The story is rooted in real-life magic—Sunrise, the horse at its heart, is a gentle and intuitive therapy horse who continues to work alongside her sister Heldi, nephew Torkel, and all the amazing horses at the stable. Karen's experience watching these horses connect with children with special needs—simply by showing up, listening, and offering joy—sparked a story about healing, resilience, and the quiet power of presence. A visit to 1dr Acres Farm, Sunrise's birthplace, deepened the sense of wonder that flows through every page.
Karen Storer, RN, MBA, is a nurse and equine therapy volunteer whose work with children and therapy horses inspired A Horse Named Sunrise. She lives in the Chicago area with her husband and continues to write stories that celebrate kindness, courage, and connection. Karen dedicates this book with love to her children.
