Book Details
Leadership isn't learned in theory. It's tested when the company is struggling, the team is under pressure, and the next decision matters.
Jeff Van Straten has lived those moments in two very different arenas. As a five-time CEO and president of multiple companies, he led multimillion-dollar businesses through financial and cultural turnarounds. As a golf coach, he built championship programs and led a high school team to a Division 1 state title, while coaching athletes at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels.
In G.R.I.T.: Leadership Lessons from the Golf Course, Jeff turns those hard-earned lessons into eighteen practical leadership principles, one for each hole. Through real stories from the boardroom and the course, he shows how growth, resilience, intentionality, and tenacity help leaders make better decisions, respond to setbacks, build stronger teams, and perform when the stakes are high.
Whether you lead a company, coach a team, or simply want to become a stronger leader, this isn't leadership theory. It's a field-tested guide to getting better, staying steady under pressure, and finishing strong.
Author Description
Jeff Van Straten is an executive coach, five-time CEO, and lifelong student of leadership. Early in his career, he discovered that the golf course is one of the world's best classrooms. He serves on multiple boards and is an accomplished golf coach who has spent more than two decades developing resilient leaders and disciplined competitors. With a BBA from the University of Wisconsin– Madison and an MBA from Northeastern University, he has guided five companies through financial and cultural turnarounds.
In parallel to his executive career, Jeff is an award-winning golf coach who has built championship programs and mentored high-performing high school, NCAA, and professional athletes. He has applied the same leadership principles of continuous improvement, resilience, intentionality, and tenacity both in the boardroom and on the golf course, showing how great leadership is forged in quiet, daily habits just as much as the high-stakes decisions. For over four decades he has guided organizations, boards, and emerging leaders through growth, crisis, and transformation. Jeff integrates lessons from competitive golf with battle-tested executive principles to help leaders build clarity, resilience, and emotional discipline. Today, Jeff uses his G.R.I.T. framework to coach founders, executives, and young professionals, equipping them to lead with confidence and clarity when the stakes are at their highest.
Jeff splits his time between Wisconsin and Arizona, where he continues to coach, consult, and advise executives and golfers committed to high performance, strong culture, and meaningful results. Through this unique perspective, the aim of this book is to help others discover how leadership principles used by business executives can significantly improve success in other endeavors as well.www.JeffVanStraten.com
