Having lived with the Whitneys for a month and a half a few years prior, Joseph and Emma Smith gratefully accepted the invitation of Newel K. and Elizabeth Ann Whitney to move to an apartment the Whitneys had prepared for them in the second story of Newel's store. Here, their first child to live to adulthood was born, and here the Prophet received the revelation to build the Kirtland Temple, the Word of Wisdom, a revelation on the priesthood, and many more. No wonder it is said of the Whitney Store along with the other Kirtland historic sites “Kirtland is an unusual place, a remarkable place, an interesting place, and a very important place in the history of this work."
