“Come the Rain” has one of the best opening chapters I’ve ever read. Full of gritty realism, horrific evil, and a sympathetic, but kick-ass heroine; Shannon Smiley immediately grabbed my imagination and kept it throughout most of this impressive debut novel. Anastasija and Camron make a great romantic couple, both hiding much of their past, but finding healing within their relationship. I also loved how Anastasija’s foster family was portrayed—it’s refreshing to see a family that loves each other, has faith in God, and yet isn’t written stereotypically. They are a real family; flawed but working out their lives together and opening their home to a broken girl who desperately needs to belong. The ending leaves the reader on the edge, waiting impatiently for a sequel!!!! I hope it comes soon!
