The media coins her the "Equinox Angel," the mysterious sixteen-year-old who saves the life of a young girl on the NYC subway. With a thick file on behavioral issues, Anastasija Volikov knows she's no angel. A ward of the state since the age of six, she's seen seven placements, has suffered physical and sexual abuse, has learned never to love or trust. She is a product of "The System." She is unreachable.
Until she moves to Constance.
Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, Shannon Smiley has spent her life with the "pen to the page." Poetry, short stories, novels, even lyrics to songs, she's given it a go with it all, and she has many to thank for it. A wonderful mom and dad. A loving husband. Two amazing kids. And not to be forgotten, the dog named, Moose, who patiently lies at her feet.

“Come the Rain” has one of the best opening chapters I’ve ever read. Full of gritty realism, horrific evil, and a sympathetic, but kick-ass heroine; Shannon Smiley immediately grabbed my imagination and kept it throughout most of this impressive debut novel. Anastasija and Camron make a great romantic couple, both hiding much of their past, but finding healing within their relationship. I also loved how Anastasija’s foster family was portrayed—it’s refreshing to see a family that loves each other, has faith in God, and yet isn’t written stereotypically. They are a real family; flawed but working out their lives together and opening their home to a broken girl who desperately needs to belong. The ending leaves the reader on the edge, waiting impatiently for a sequel!!!! I hope it comes soon!
