Book Details

The following is a collection of poems written over a period of time. It is an eclectic mixture, with themes ranging from Stephen Hawking's brief history of time, the Rig Veda and Jawaharlal Nehru's Discovery of India. There are poems on the Indian seasons, Indian weather and romance. What they do have in common is that most of them have been modelled on the Locksley Hall metre. It is one of the archaic metres which is still there in circulation. Though it was used extensively in medieval Europe, it is comparatively easy to handle due to its inherent flexibility. The anthology has relatively fewer themes, but the ones that are present are thought provoking. The six Indian seasons have been dealt with in detail in Kalidasa's Ritusamhara. There are Ragas in Hindustani classical music that are specifically sung during the onset of a season. Having read Kalidasa's rendition of the Hemanta Ritu and Sharad Ritu, I was convinced that only the Locksley hall metre could do justice to the descriptions of Indian autumn or winter.

The poems on the birth and dissolution of the cosmos are based on the Rig Veda, and the Discovery of India has an interpretation of it. There are striking parallels to the Nasadiya Sukta in Stephen Hawking's The Brief History of Time.

I have always felt that poetry does more justice to the classics of any nation, rather than mere prose. The same is true of all languages, especially when romantic scenes are described. I hope this small booklet will inspire the readers to go into the originals, besides stimulating their thinking.
